Term 1 Brief 2: Typologies. Spatial organization, type, present, user
Building: Semi-detached Victorian House
Type: Art-deco 1930s
Location: 21 Poland Street, Soho, London, UK WIF 8QG
The aim of this brief was to explore building typologies by looking at them from a most recent perspective such as peer - to - peer - housing.
At the beginning of the brief we had to choose one space rented out from a list of websites advertising peer to peer housing. According to our group the space would be used for either sleeping, co-working or meeting. After choosing the space we had to research the type of building it was found in as well as information on the context, site, history and architectural drawings. Since our search area was limited within London, we were able to visit the spaces we chose personally. After organizing all this information we had to draw detailed plans and sections of our spaces in order to better ivesti- gate how space organization affected human functions. We then moved to the neighborhood scale where we drew a plan of our site as well as identi- fied the building types in that area. The next step was to research the eco- nomical impact of such a rental market by converting our information into diagrams and graphs.
The second part of the brief included each group adding their drawings and research together in an A0 in order to draw a conclusion on the subject.

In this brief we were introduced with the peer to peer housing system while exploring different building typologies and means of visually communicating them such as illustrator. The interesting thing about the brief was that we not only dealt with trying to understand how the economy of this type of market works and how it is influencing the lives of people. In virtually researching the day of one individual through a context of peer to peer housing we learned that the overall cost throughout the day was much more expensive than using other means of rental or transportation. In comparison to the aver- age office prices in the area the peer to peer ones were almost always higher. So this rises the question: Why is this type of market expanding and where is the demand coming from?
